What do councillors do?
Councillors act as the champions of their community to make a real difference by engaging with residents, local groups, businesses, and other parts of local government; making decisions on which services and projects the council should take forward; and ensuring that services meet your community’s needs.
How long does it take?
The National Association of Local Councils (NALC) Local Councillor Census Survey found that, on average, councillors put aside three hours a week for council work. This usually includes attending meetings, engaging with residents, and speaking to other bodies on behalf of the council.
Can I stand?
You don’t need any qualifications. Only a few rules are needed to be a councillor. You must:
- be a British citizen, or a citizen of the Commonwealth, or the European Union
- be 18 years of age or older
- live or work within 3 miles of the parish
